2021 OMA DIG AND DISCOVER: Investigating Art of the Ancient Americas

Docent-led gallery program for elementary students in which they investigate ancient cultures of North, Central and South America through beautiful artifacts in the Art of the Ancient Americas collection. Students become archaeologists, including participating in a mock “dig.” The program helps students explore how art and archaeology help us learn about the past.

A Good Day for Pancake/DIGITAL

A Good Day for Pancake/DIGITAL (Social Emotional Learning – Bully Prevention for grades PreK-2nd) When a friend is bullied at school, Pancake the Pig doesn’t know how to help. As the bullying gets worse, Pancake and his friends soon learn the difference between tattling and reporting, the definition of bullying behavior, and how to stand together to stop the bullying. A Good Day for Pancake/DIGITAL encourages empathy and demonstrates to young audiences how to go from bystanders to Upstanders. Featuring engaging music and cuddly puppet characters, the show provides interaction with youngsters as they laugh and sing along with Pancake and his friends. Children are engaged in call and response and learn songs about reporting (not tattling) bullying behavior. Together they learn valuable lessons in bully prevention. A Musical Journey Through Florida

In-School Performance

Chris Kahl takes audiences on a Musical Journey Through Florida, highlighting the rich history and culture of the Sunshine State. This folk music presentation takes students on a historical journey through the state, featuring performances of original songs and stories, and covering a wealth of historical events, characters, and folklore. Topics include Ponce de Leon’s voyage to Florida in 1513, the rise of Florida’s citrus industry, how railroads opened up Florida to tourism, and the Seminole tribe and their relationship to the Everglades eco-system and its species. In addition to Florida history, Chris will cover his folk instruments (acoustic guitar and harmonica), his folk performing style, and his songwriting process. The presentation covers key aspects in the Florida Studies unit, as well as numerous Florida Standards.

A Walk through Our Community - Mapping Skills, Citizen Heroes, and a Scavenger Hunt! (Grades 1 and 2)

In this program, first and second grade students experience three activities: 1) learning about “Citizen Heroes” who made significant contributions and how they, too, can be citizen heroes; 2) searching through the Heritage Museum looking for items on a scavenger hunt; 3) and developing mapping skills while walking along the West Orange Trail in search of buildings that are important to our community. The concept of “community” is stressed throughout, both in the students’ lives and in their visit to Winter Garden’s Downtown Historic District. It’s hands-on history!

Gerda must save her friend, Kay, who has become enchanted and can see no good in the world. Gerda seeks help from a talking (and singing) crow, the notorious (and comic) Robber Prince, and a Reindeer Herder (and her audience participant reindeer), as they try to save Kay from the mysterious Snow Queen. Art in the Archives Temporary Exhibit Tour and Art Project

This tour takes students through the Welcome Center and History Museum, with a private tour of the Temporary Exhibit room. Students with then participate in a hands-on art activity that connects to the history displayed in the Temporary Exhibit.

As part of its outstanding educational outreach program, The Winter Park Playhouse is proud to offer digital curriculum to supplement your in-person or digital classroom! Using songs from Schoolhouse Rock, Live! Jr, you will be provided short and engaging videos (via private video links) where music education will support classroom curriculum — teaching your students in a way that they will remember for many years to come. Songs include “A Noun is a Person, Place, or Thing,” “Unpack Your Adjectives,” “The Preamble,” “Interjections,” “Three is a Magic Number,” and “Conjunction Junction.” Each packet provides a virtual lesson, as well as an opportunity for your students to submit a recording of themselves showing their mastery of the song or dance. Lessons are also supported with accompanying worksheets.

Travel back in time with the music and history of Motown! Get your students singing and dancing to the classic hits of the Jackson 5, Martha and the Vandellas, and the Four Tops in this newly expanded interactive digital program. As part of its outstanding educational outreach program, The Winter Park Playhouse is proud to offer digital curriculum to supplement your classroom! Students will learn a section of music and choreography from Motown standards, as well as supplemental lessons in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. The Winter Park Playhouse will provide engaging video lessons (via private video links) focused on Motown songs and choreography— teaching your students in a way that they will remember for many years to come. Each packet contains lesson plans supported with accompanying links for further discovery of Motown history.

Books Alive!

In-School Workshops & Classes

During this interactive workshop, Orlando Shakes’ Teaching Artists help your students bring a book to life, be it Magic Tree House, Miss Nelson Is Missing, Interstellar Cinderella, or any favorite children’s story. Students are introduced to the theater artist roles of director, stage manager, and actor. Through interactive games and theater exercises, students explore the story’s settings, characters, costumes, and props by creating a “snapshot” of story elements using their own bodies as statues. Students are then challenged to create their own “spin-off” story that take the characters from the story to new places. Need something different? Circuits, Connectivity, Communication

Field Trip

Join the Art & History Museums of Maitland to tour our interactive Telephone Museum. Students will learn how to create their own circuit boards with this STEM programming. Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and hands-on experience with building a circuit to communicate with each other using Morse code. Students will gain a basic understanding of circuitry and the components that need to come together in order to make a simple circuit work. We will go over the history of communication introducing big inventors who helped in the advancement of communication. Then students will have an opportunity to create their own circuit board with the tools and materials we provide. There will also be opportunities for them to troubleshoot and figure out on their own how to add components and make an even more complex circuit.

Collograph Printmaking for All!

In-School Workshops & Classes

This program is designed for two class periods, so that students can participate fully and complete a project to take home. We provide special equipment, materials and tools. Students will learn a brief history of printmaking and its connection to the Art & History Museums–Maitland. We will share examples of etchings by J. André Smith, founder of the Maitland Art Center and others such as Pablo Picasso, Glen Alps, Jasper Johns , and Andy Warhol. They will learn that a print is a reproducible medium. The concept of design and creating a copy will be taught through the simple process of collagraphs. Students may have the opportunity to collaborate with other students to make their own unique works of art.

Grant funding is available for OCPS 2nd and 3rd graders; transportation must be reserved by the school.

Creative Drama: Discover Your Inner Character

In this course students will learn the techniques of Creative Drama in a safe and welcoming environment through the utilization of improv techniques. This workshop will focus on 5 main components of creative drama: Body Awareness, Space, Interaction & Quick Thinking, & Character Building. (Topics to choose from really best if built upon, but can be taken individually or combined into one 2 hour workshop ) Body Awareness These acting exercises focus on the student looking inward. The goal is to inspire concentration and allow students to check in with their bodies and find focused energy. Space These acting exercises help develop an understanding of surroundings. It also challenges students to explore characters and experience different points of view while engaging with ideas outside of themselves. Interaction These acting exercises focus on group interaction using both non-verbal communication, expression, & body language. Quick Thinking These acting exercises encourage students to think quickly, creatively and independently of their peers. Be prepared to be silly and have fun! Character Development These exercises challenge students to think outside themselves. How may your point of view change when thinking as someone else?

This personal/imaginative narrative/Creative Writing residency relates to the curriculum in the following ways: 1) it teaches the use of describing words in written expression; 2) it models the use of different kinds of sentences; 3) it teaches students how to write a creative narrative story; 4) it encourages the personal interpretation of the expressive qualities of art; 5) it teaches students how to draw concepts and ideas from other subjects; 6) It uses culture and environment as inspiration for creating art; 7) it uses real and imaginary subject matter in works of art Program Objectives: 1) Students will be presented with an easy-to-remember method for writing creative and personal narrative stories; 2) Students will be given a solid theoretical understanding of creative writing: character (who), location (setting), action (what) and problem (why). 3) Students will be taught to create and visualize dramatic situations to use as ideas for writing.

Co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center, LIVE WIRE! The Electricity Tour premiered in Washington, DC in September 2014. Doktor Kaboom explores the fundamentals of electrical energy and the history of humanity’s adventures into its potential. At the dawn of the 19th century, mankind first harnessed the power of electricity. The world changed and the journey still continues. Topics covered include: safety, Nicola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Michael Faraday, lightning bolts, current, voltage, conductive and non-conductive media, electrical arcs, light emission, sparks, resistance, magnetic fields, electric generators, mechanical energy to electrical energy, electromagnetic coils and conductors.
