2021 OMA DIG AND DISCOVER: Investigating Art of the Ancient Americas

Docent-led gallery program for elementary students in which they investigate ancient cultures of North, Central and South America through beautiful artifacts in the Art of the Ancient Americas collection. Students become archaeologists, including participating in a mock “dig.” The program helps students explore how art and archaeology help us learn about the past.

A Walk through Our Community - Mapping Skills, Citizen Heroes, and a Scavenger Hunt! (Grades 1 and 2)

In this program, first and second grade students experience three activities: 1) learning about “Citizen Heroes” who made significant contributions and how they, too, can be citizen heroes; 2) searching through the Heritage Museum looking for items on a scavenger hunt; 3) and developing mapping skills while walking along the West Orange Trail in search of buildings that are important to our community. The concept of “community” is stressed throughout, both in the students’ lives and in their visit to Winter Garden’s Downtown Historic District. It’s hands-on history!

Gerda must save her friend, Kay, who has become enchanted and can see no good in the world. Gerda seeks help from a talking (and singing) crow, the notorious (and comic) Robber Prince, and a Reindeer Herder (and her audience participant reindeer), as they try to save Kay from the mysterious Snow Queen. Art in the Archives Temporary Exhibit Tour and Art Project

This tour takes students through the Welcome Center and History Museum, with a private tour of the Temporary Exhibit room. Students with then participate in a hands-on art activity that connects to the history displayed in the Temporary Exhibit.

Circuits, Connectivity, Communication

Field Trip

Join the Art & History Museums of Maitland to tour our interactive Telephone Museum. Students will learn how to create their own circuit boards with this STEM programming. Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and hands-on experience with building a circuit to communicate with each other using Morse code. Students will gain a basic understanding of circuitry and the components that need to come together in order to make a simple circuit work. We will go over the history of communication introducing big inventors who helped in the advancement of communication. Then students will have an opportunity to create their own circuit board with the tools and materials we provide. There will also be opportunities for them to troubleshoot and figure out on their own how to add components and make an even more complex circuit.

Visit a working art studio with a three-part experience: an art-making demonstration on the potter’s wheel, a scavenger hunt through the Contemporary Sculpture Garden and a hands-on art activity. The experience can be tailored to specific concepts or topics being studied. Call for availability.

Crealdé Public School Field Trip - Art Adventure: A Visit to the Art Studio (Grades 2-3)

Visit a working art studio with a three-part experience: observing an artist at work on the potter’s wheel, touring the Contemporary Sculpture Garden and galleries, and creating a hands-on art activity. Grant funding is available for OCPS 2nd and 3rd graders; transportation must be reserved by the school.

Experience History through Architecture, Costumes, and Citizen Super Heroes! (Grades 4 and 5)

In this 2 1/2 hour program, students are led by staff through the 20th century beginning with a colorful and fun PowerPoint presentation called “Timucua, Trains, and Trees.” It addresses local history as impacted by major national and international events and how those events shaped Central Florida – including the history of citrus, and the saga of Lake Apopka, the region’s most important natural resource. It addresses the effects of farming and other industries on the farm workers, as well as the tourist facilities that were once located around the lake. Following the presentation, classes engage in three activities where they: 1) use detective skills to match photos of historic buildings to how buildings along Plant Street appear today; 2) explore the Winter Garden Heritage Museum, uncovering information about Citizen Heroes; 3) and dress as costumed Native Americans, farmers, business owners, or fishermen to answer questions about their influence on the region

Field Trip to the Holocaust Center

The Holocaust Center serves more than 20,000 students in the Central Florida area each year. Students who attend a Holocaust Center Field Trip learn about the history of the Holocaust in order to shape a brighter future. After seeing the museum’s permanent exhibit, students will have an opportunity to explore a traveling exhibit that changes every few months. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from a Holocaust Survivor through the USC Shoah Foundation’s Dimensions in Testimony. *Program also available to homeschool groups.

The Art & History Museums – Maitland is unique, in that it is a conglomerate of 4 different places and spaces connected by our common location. The Research Studio was founded as an artist colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, Jules André Smith, and is the only National Historic Landmark in the four-county area of Central Florida. The Landmark status was awarded due to the Mayan Revival architecture — including 200+ murals & sculptures throughout the campus — and significance as a retreat for notable American artists. Students can visit the Art & History Museums-Maitland and explore our campus in many ways. History & Art Tour: The Research Studio, including the Gallery and Grounds & The Maitland Historical Museum, 1 hour This tour is art and local history based. Students will explore our main campus while learning about founder J. Andre Smith and his vision for creating a space for artists to live and work. During the school year our gallery features a Fall exhibit and a Winter exhibit that both have local and regional connections. The grounds of the Research Studio are full of places to explore and discuss art and architecture. There are so many stories to tell and hidden visual treasures to find. Additionally, The Maitland Historical Museum is a connected space that delves deeper into Smith’s connection to Maitland and surrounding areas. Program: Interactive activities can include a History Hunt (a visual scavenger hunt), creating crayon rubbings based off of Smith’s carved cement tiles and plein air drawing. History & Science Tour: The Telephone Museum, 30-45 minutes Our newly renovated Telephone Museum is an interactive and exciting place for students to learn all about the history of telecommunication and how it connects to our region. They will experience telephone technology from switchboards to telephone booths, to rotary phones. Program: The history of communication and the science of sound will be taught through interactive Sound Stations as a part of their experience at the Telephone Museum. History Tour: The Waterhouse Residence, 1 hour Built in 1884 by pioneer settler and builder William H. Waterhouse as a home for his family, the house was beautifully restored to represent the lifestyle enjoyed by a middle class family during the late Victorian period. This historic house museum reflects the life of a middle class Victorian family during the early days of the City of Maitland. Program: Various activities can be included in this tour including, making a thaumatrope and playing Victorian era games.

Fully Guided Tour: Art Gallery, Historic Home & Studio, Sculpture Gardens

Explore the grounds of the Polasek with your class! On this tour, your students will see the current exhibition in the Polasek’s rotating Art Gallery, view representational sculpture throughout the Sculpture Gardens, and tour Albin Polasek’s Historic Home and Studio. A 12-minute video on the life of Albin Polasek is typically included although it is not necessary for all tours/ages. Choose a lesson focus for your tour from the following options, lesson plans available below: Texture Detectives (Grades K-2) Your students will connect descriptive art/science terms and definitions to visual, real-world examples by using their senses. Students will respond to word cues, as they are asked to select, find and describe “texture” in our classical sculpture collection and through our natural garden environment. This real museum/garden experiences provide opportunities for students to make connections, to make predictions and inferences, and to ask more meaningful questions. Sculpture Stories (Grades 3-8) Students will use their infinite imaginations to come up with new stories about our Polasek sculpture. Their adventure begins by learning about some of the Slavic myths that young Albin Polasek grew up with as a child. Then they will see first-hand how he used these folktales to create his outdoor sculpture. After their tour of the historic home and sculpture gardens, we will ask your students to find their favorite outdoor piece and give them a new title or name, design and draw a new outfit/costume/hairstyle/or accessory for their figure, and finally write a new story for their character. They will integrate factual elements from the existing figures, to translate into their own conceptual tale. Designs that INSPIRE (Grades 6-12) Students will design an inspirational tee-shirt or bumper sticker as if they were a graphic designer on the Polasek Museum staff. They will use Albin Polasek’s signature theme of “Man Carving His Own Destiny” and the accompanying sculpture as a foundation to their design. They will apply what they learn during their historic home tour as they examine the classical works of Albin Polasek; soaking up inspiration first-hand. Our trained docent/educator will engage students in the artist’s historic studio and gardens and focus on “inspirational” works and the deeper meaning behind these sculptures. Students will reflect on their experience to carry out and create their design or slogan. Art Meets Math – Proportions and Measurements (Grades 6-12) The study of anatomy and proportion in sculpture has been utilized since the Classical Period when Greek and Roman sculptors began to portray the human body in a more accurate and natural manner.Students will analyze the anatomical advancements of the Greek and Renaissance periods in sculpture. They will apply these concepts during their historic home tour and examine the classical works of Albin Polasek. Our trained docent/educator will engage students in the artist’s historic studio by exploring a selection of his sculpture tools, including proportion calipers. Students will measure and evaluate select Polasek works and check their proportion against measurement standards. Further measurement and scrutiny of the face will help them sketch a portrait using this applied mathematical concept. Exploring the Gilded Age – Grades 9-12 The Gilded Age, with regards sculpture, refers to a specific era in American history and also a specific style of artwork or art movement, that rose from this period of industrialized growth and lavish wealth. This period lasted from roughly from the end of the Civil War to World War I (1870s-1917). Affluent Americans of the Gilded Age associated a lush and romantic style with European aristocracy, which they often strove to emulate. Students will visually evaluate the works of art found in the Polasek Historic Home and apply the Gilded Age concepts they have learned to understand which works fall into this aesthetic movement and historical time period. They will then create drawings based on this new knowledge and conduct research on their own. * Please note that students will see nude classical sculpture that may be both religious and secular in nature. Sculptures will not be censored; however, thoughtful and educational discussion will be age appropriate. ***Please dress appropriately for current weather conditions but be prepared for all weather conditions. Students will be walking for part of the tour outdoors on paved walkways. Although the walking distance is short, it may be advisable to bring hats, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, and extra water for all students. *Program also available to homeschool groups.

Heritage Center Public School Field Trip Program - What Heritage Means to Me

The “What Heritage Means to Me” Public School Field Trip Program offers groups of up to 30 fourth to eighth graders an interactive tour and discussion of The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park, a permanent, museum-quality exhibition of more than 100 framed, archival pieces that capture the lives of Winter Park’s African-American community. Also on display is the Hannibal Square Timeline that documents significant local and national events in African-American history since the Emancipation Proclamation. A discussion followed by a tour is led by a community historian. Then students participate in a visual art hands-on workshop, creating a piece of folk art based on their personal experience of tradition, heritage, family, community and country.

High School Portfolio Review

Intro to Ballet

For ALL 2nd Graders: Orlando Ballet has presented educational story ballet to every Orange County Public School second grade student for more than 20 years through Intro to Ballet. Public school educators are provided with lesson plans to prepare the students for both their first formal theatre and performance experience. Ballets are 30 – 40 minutes and are preceded by a 10 – 15 minute interactive lecture demonstration

Living History Pioneer Village Tour

Tour multiple structures from the late 1800’s, including a cracker house, blacksmith shop, school house, train depot, Seminole village, cow camp and more! Each building is packed with artifacts to showcase the lifestyle of early Florida pioneers. – Pioneer Activities – Throughout your tour of the Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek, your students will learn how Central Florida’s early settlers survived and lived in the area. Activites that could be presented on your tour include butter-making, pioneer laundry day, sack races, and other fun activities from the era. * Minimum 10 students

The Orlando Science Center offers a variety of educational programs to support our primary mission to “inspire science learning for life.” School Field Trips A typical field trip may start off with a hands-on Discovery Lab with a topic of choice, in which students will learn about a given topic by rotating through a stations-based lab. Then, they may go to a Giant Screen Film to watch a film connected with a science topic. After eating lunch, the group rotates through exhibits. STEM Field Trips The Science Center offers STEM field trips that feature in-depth design challenges based on fundamental engineering principles. Students will engage in various challenges both in our labs and on the exhibit floor, working together to solve problems and design structures. Only Orange County Public Schools can apply for funding for this program (press “Book This Organization,” then look for the United Arts Field Trip Reservation Form on the right); Lake, Osceola and Seminole schools can purchase a program if desired.
