The Musical Theatre Summer Program is strategically designed to equip beginner to intermediate-level performing artists ages 8 to 14 years old with new and/or refined skills in jazz dance, acting, voice and production, preparing them for ongoing and disciplined studies in the performing arts. Students must attend all weeks of the Program to participate in the final showcase. There is no audition required to attend Program, but students must be ready for serious, focused studies in the performing arts. The Program emphasizes the technical principles of jazz dance (influenced by the styles of Bob Avian and Bob Fosse), acting (Meisner Method) and voice, alongside a creative curriculum that supports a student’s individual artistry. In an encouraging environment, participants integrate elements of jazz dance, scenework and song to produce a fully-realized musical theatre revue inspired by the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and other legendary Broadway jazz composers. Also included is the development of musical/rhythmic awareness, memory/focus for the training process, and an understanding of the protocol and etiquette of the performing arts studio. Performance quality will be emphasized, with increasing difficulty and simultaneously performed disciplines added to the student’s routine. Roles for the final production will be decided by the Director, based on each student’s interest and skill level. The final showcase involves the presentation of in-progress works and creative demonstrations of solid technique. Upon completion of the Program, the School will extend invitations to exceptional students for entry into the Pre-Professional Musical Theatre Program, which begins the week of August 14, 2017.
